AWS Smart City Innovation Center

Also known as the CIC, the ASU Smart City Innovation Center employs Amazon’s innovation processes, cloud expertise, and global solution platforms to solve pressing community and regional challenges.

The center is designed as part of a long-term collaboration between ASU and AWS to improve digital experiences for smart city designers, expand technology alternatives while minimizing costs, spur economic and workforce development and facilitate sharing public sector solutions within the region.

FROM IDEA TO DEPLOY

The challenge

Patagonian provided a development cell to assist the AWS Smart Cities team in partnering with Arizona State University CIC (Cloud Innovation Center) on a project with a tight timeline. The challenge was to create an urgent solution to assist families whose jobs or income sources were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Objective

To create a backend solution in less than a month that aids Arizona State University in its mission to help people that were/are unable to pay their utility bills due to the coronavirus outbreak.

SOLUTION

Through test driven development methods we were able to develop, test and deploy a fully fledged API that can recognize characters and serialize the extracted data.

This solution was the centerpiece of the Arizona State University project. The OCR system allows the user to upload their utility bills and request for financial assistance.

Results

Our backend solution was built in less than a month and integrated – as the centerpiece – into a set of tools used by ASU CIC in their mission to assist those most affected by the coronavirus outbreak. The city of Phoenix used the tool to distribute federal funding of over 20M to people in need. Thanks to this solution, people were able to save time and get expedited assistance.
